曾几何时，PC玩家还讨厌Steam呢——2003年9月12日，PC玩家认为Valve似乎试图淘汰掉世界对抗网络系统和实体DVD光盘。而2004年3月推出的《半衰期2》即使你购买了实体光盘，也需要通过Steam来进行游戏，这让Steam看起来像是一种高级的数字版权管理技术。
因为Steam的诞生，许多游戏厂商认为自己不必给Valve交税上架至Steam，可以创建属于自家的数字游戏发行平台，比如EA的Origin和Ubisoft的UPlay。
但是《半衰期2》及其模组最终获得了巨大成功，而Valve与一个又一个游戏开发商达成的交易迅速使Steam成为世界上最大、最知名的PC游戏平台。
