根据8月11日在Twitter上的@BwE_Dev网友分享的视频，一款被认为是PlayStation 5 Slim机型的底盘亮相了。这个底盘看起来并没有明显变窄，只是比售价499美元的光驱版主机要短一些。两者最明显的区别是泄露的底盘似乎具有可拆卸的光驱，从主机顶部的三分之一处有一个明显的间隙。根据同一消息来源，这个改版的机型被称为CFI-2016。值得一提的是，最新的PS5光驱版和PS5数字版主机分别被标记为CFI-1202A和CFI-1202B。
据业内知名人士汤姆·亨德森报导，索尼的这款较小的机型确实存在，但它不会进一步复杂化现有的PS5产品线，也不会对消费者产生任何影响。据称，CFI-2016的目的是通过使用同一条生产线为两种机型进行生产，然后只需在价格更高的机型上安装光驱，从而简化索尼的制造流程。拥有这样一个模块化系统而不是两个独立系统理论上可以帮助索尼降低生产成本。
可拆卸的光驱也可以降低维修成本，因为故障的光盘读取器将更容易更换。但这并不意味着PS5 Slim会有一个用户可拆卸的驱动器，至少假设用户不是一个带着螺丝刀的修理者。光盘读取器能够真正模块化并且可以直接插入PS5 Slim的机会很小。虽然这样的设计将允许索尼将光驱单独销售，作为升级数字版主机的方式，但与当前PS5机型中连接主板和光驱的数据带电缆相比，它的读取速度要差得多。
